It can awe and inspire by capturing and then immediately deconstructing the reality of cities. By chance, a photographer could produce an outstanding image, with the right measure of passion and intuition, understanding and criticism, destruction and construction, subjectivity and objectivity, and so on. However, it is almost impossible to encounter and capture something better than the first one. My goal is to capture the image that comes next. I try to live a photographic life to be ready to take deliberate and decisive action when the next moment comes. Photographs, whether they are simple or complicated, can heighten the awareness of the viewers through the representation of light and shadow. This power of photography is what stimulates an aesthetic or photographic response, inspires imagination and promotes the free association of ideas that are complementary, triggered by internal or external stimuli. This being said, I would say my photographs are architypes of images. -Hitoshi Tsukiji

Tsukiji's images have a hard-edged sharpness, betraying a predilection toward clearly defined forms and shapes. A crossroads of cultures, cradle of founding myths, the Mediterranean region is, today more than ever, marked by migration, exile, and displacement. Over the course of seven journeys and numerous chance encounters, Mascaro reaches out to the youth who live in and travel through this region. The literary stories that nourished the artist are the invisible companions of the photographs. They imbue contemporary images with their ancient sources. She lets images flow freely with organic, psychic, and elemental forms. This refined aesthetic is forged in black and white, in centered yet agitated compositions, in the play of movement and blur. Sometimes jarring, prone to cracks and bursts, sometimes liberated, soothed, her photographs instinctively follow the course of a fluid, powerfully introspective narrative. But even before that date, photographing North Korea's enigmatic landscapes posed immense challenges due to the regime's strict control and ban on unauthorized photography. However, drawing on a vast archive of images painstakingly captured over two years, Tariq Zaidi presents in this book a selection of over 100 remarkable photographs that offer a broader perspective on a society often misunderstood and overshadowed by stereotypes.
North Korea is associated with Kim Jong Un's absolute rule and state-controlled propaganda. The Juche philosophy, attributed to Kim Il Sung, is central to its political ideology. Juche emphasizes self-reliance, independence, and the supremacy of the state over the individual. It permeates all aspects of society through propaganda, education, and cultural activities. However, North Korea demands a more humanistic understanding of its culture, beyond politics. While most information about the country offers a one-dimensional perspective, photography emerges as a vital means of capturing and appreciating its complexities.
From Dandong (on the Chinese border) in the north to Kaesong and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the south, across the country from Nampo and the capital Pyongyang in the west to Wonsan on the east coast, and then north to Hamhung, Chongjin, and Hoeryong (near the Sino-Russian border), the photographer immerses himself in diverse landscapes and cities to get a closer look at this country and its people. Zaidi's lens skillfully captures the resilience, spirit, and cultural nuances of the North Korean people in their daily lives. Each photograph is a window into a hidden reality, revealing the complex interplay between tradition and modernity while illuminating the intricate dynamics of a nation navigating its path amidst global scrutiny.

Motoyuki Daifu
My Family Is A Pubis So I Cover Them In Pretty Panties (signed)

Published by Little Big Man, 2024
Size: 27.8 × 23.2 cm
136 pages
Hardcover
First edition limited to 700 copies

At the beginning of the project, I wrote the following words:

“ I come from a family of seven . My parents’ living room is a permanent mess, with laundry drying inside due to lack of space on the balcony. The field of vision of these pairs usually overlaps, perhaps mimicking the way that human eyes take in visual information. The content of Tsuda's landscapes ranges from meadows to foggy mountains to the desert. The last half of the book, though, begins to hint at the experience behind this work: we see a shaman, some people sitting in a stone dwelling, a man in a turban. In his text following the photographs, Tsuda explains that these photos were taken in remote areas China, Morocco and Mongolia. He feels that there is a kind of "wind belt" encompassing the globe, which unites regions of the world. He goes on to describe his almost mystical encounters with the people who guided him through these places far from modern civilization.
