Elles avaient été écrasées non seulement par l'ignorance, la pauvreté et une vie de famille éclatée, qui sont le lot commun de presque tous les détenus, mais aussi par des années - quand ce n'est pas une vie entière - d'abus physiques et sexuels exercés sur elles par les hommes.
