YGGDRASIL - Dana Cojbuc

 

 

 

 À l’occasion d’une résidence sur l’île de Halsnoy en Norvège, Dana Cojbuc réalise la série photographique Yggdrasil, du nom de l’arbre-monde de la mythologie norvégienne.

Dans ses images, Dana Cojbuc use de la photographie et du dessin pour capturer le réel et l’investir de ses rêves.

Sur cette petite île de Norvège, la forêt dense et humide fait face à la mer étale, mêlée de brouillard d’où émergent, fantomatiques, quelques îlots. Là-bas, la nature s’est imposée à Dana Cojbuc avec force mais sans violence ; l’artiste semble s’être simplement laissée happer par la puissance des éléments.

La forêt, surtout, est venue se mêler à ses mémoires et à son imaginaire. Dans l’œil de Dana et sous ses doigts, la forêt d’Halsnoy bien réelle prend des allures enchanteresses : parfois inquiétante, parfois apaisante… toujours envoûtante.

Le travail photographique de Dana Cojbuc se nourrit des apports d’autres techniques artistiques : volume et profondeur de la sculpture, art du récit inhérent à la vidéo, exploration de l’intime par le dessin…

Le dessin pour Dana est une façon de réintroduire la part secrète dont le réel se nourrit pour pousser, palpiter, s’échapper des carcans définis. C’est ici aussi l’intention de l’artiste : redonner des contours organiques à cette nature qui ne saurait se contraindre dans la parfaite forme géométrique imposée par l’appareil photographique. Une image ou un paysage ne deviendra nôtre que lorsque l’on y aura placé une parcelle de soi, intime et secrète – fragments de rêve ou vague d’imaginaire – qu’un souvenir viendra s’y accoler ou que nos désirs viendront l’investir.

During a residency on the island of Halsnoy in Norway, Dana Cojbuc created the photographic series Yggdrasil, named after the world-tree in Norwegian mythology.
In her images, Dana Cojbuc uses photography and drawing to capture reality and invest it with her dreams.

On this small Norwegian island, the dense and humid forest faces the vast sea, mixed with fog, from which emerge a few ghostly islets. There, nature imposed itself on Dana Cojbuc with force but without violence; the artist seems to have simply allowed herself to be caught up in the power of the elements.
The forest, above all, has become part of her memories and imagination. In Dana’s eye and under her fingers, the real Halsnoy forest takes on enchanting appearances: sometimes disturbing, sometimes soothing... always bewitching.

Dana Cojbuc’s photographic work is nourished by the contributions of other artistic techniques: the volume and depth of sculpture, the art of storytelling inherent in video, the exploration of the intimate through drawing...
For Dana, drawing is a way of reintroducing the secret part of reality that nourishes itself to grow, to palpitate, to escape from defined carcans. This is also the artist’s intention here: to give back organic contours to this nature that cannot be constrained in the perfect geometric form imposed by the camera. An image or a landscape will only become ours when we have placed in it a piece of ourselves, intimate and secret - fragments of dreams or a wave of the imagination - when a memory comes to be attached to it or when our desires come to invest it.
