Shikawatari “deer crossing” is a new photobook released by the photographer Chieko Shiraishi of snowy landscapes. The black and white poetic photographs are illustrating frozen lakes and nature of Dōtō in Eastern Hokkaido, withdrawing the silence from the environment in between the covers of the book. The artist encounters shy animals who are roaming around in the wintry wilderness, while keeping his distance, and observes the creatures through the lens of his camera. With this edition we can easily travel through the captured frozen surroundings and explore the beautiful connection between the photographer, his quiet subjects and natural space.
“While travelling through the wilderness in Dōtō, I encountered a herd of deer crossing the frozen lake in a row, silently. While gazing at the herd, I found a providential, beautiful law of nature, and I felt as though I had witnessed something sacred which is a part of nature. The wilderness of “Dōtō” provides a feeling of oneness with the majestic natural world that I had never before experienced.” (from the artist’s statement)

Shikawatari «deer crossing» est un nouveau livre photo publié par le photographe Chieko Shiraishi de paysages enneigés. Les photographies poétiques en noir et blanc illustrent les lacs gelés et la nature du Dōtō dans l'est de Hokkaido, retirant le silence de l'environnement entre les couvertures du livre. L'artiste rencontre des animaux timides qui errent dans la nature hivernale, tout en gardant sa distance, et observe les créatures à travers l'objectif de sa caméra. Avec cette édition, nous pouvons facilement voyager à travers l'environnement gelé capturé par son appareil photo et explorer la belle connexion entre le photographe, ses sujets calmes et l'espace naturel.
«En voyageant à travers le désert de Dōtō, j'ai rencontré un troupeau de cerfs traversant le lac gelé d'affilée, silencieusement. En regardant le troupeau, j'ai trouvé une belle loi providentielle de la nature, et j'ai eu l'impression d'avoir été témoin de quelque chose de sacré qui fait partie de la nature.
