This wonderful elixir of light is the thing that actually connects the immaterial with the material – that connects the cosmic to the plain everyday existence that we try to live in.
Daylight. Nothing is more ubiquitous and yet many an artist has cursed under their breath in the search for a way to capture it. Indeed, which artist has not been fascinated by a unique shaft of light, a certain glow of the sun, or the shadows cast by some particular object? It is the ambition of scientists to study light, to explain it and make it measurable. It is a primordial instinct of visual artists to follow and capture light and its beauty.
Although, as an artist, Van Doren is not loyal to any particular medium, carrier or material, she is constant in her search for light. Over the years, in works that the artist groups under the banner of ‘Waiting for, Accidents of Nature’, she has been occupied with painting the shadows that light leaves on her canvas. On other occasions she has made use of drawing materials and photographic techniques to capture ‘found’ shadows, such as those of a tree’s leaves. She invites nature itself to interact, such as in her cyanotypes, where, facilitated by a light-sensitive emulsion, the sunlight leaves a blue impression on the canvas. This gives rise to images that are literally touched by nature. These works, as abstract visualisations of time created en plein air, possess certain impressionistic qualities. Sometimes she also amplifies the power of shadows, by cutting out or perforating their contours. Holes in the shape of the shadow or perforations that let the light through: in this way, Van Doren experiments with ways of influencing, shaping or containing natural light.
Utilising a combination of such techniques, she created the artist’s book Waiting for: sitting, reading in the shadow of a tree, she allowed the sun to work its way into perforated, light-sensitised pages.

Ce merveilleux élixir de lumière est la chose qui relie réellement l'immatériel au matériel - qui relie le cosmique à la simple existence quotidienne dans laquelle nous essayons de vivre.
Lumière du jour. Rien n'est plus omniprésent et pourtant, beaucoup d'artistes ont maudit à voix basse la recherche d'un moyen de le capturer. En effet, quel artiste n'a pas été fasciné par un rayon de lumière unique, une certaine lueur du soleil, ou les ombres projetées par un objet particulier ? C'est l'ambition des scientifiques d'étudier la lumière, de l'expliquer et de la rendre mesurable. C'est un instinct primordial des artistes visuels de suivre et de capturer la lumière et sa beauté.
Bien qu'en tant qu'artiste, Van Doren ne soit fidèle à aucun médium, support ou matériau en particulier, elle est constante dans sa recherche de lumière. Au fil des années, dans des œuvres que l'artiste regroupe sous la bannière de « En attendant, les accidents de la nature », elle s'est occupée de peindre les ombres que la lumière laisse sur sa toile. À d'autres occasions, elle a utilisé du matériel de dessin et des techniques photographiques pour capturer des ombres «trouvées», telles que celles des feuilles d'un arbre. Elle invite la nature elle-même à interagir, comme dans ses cyanotypes, où, facilitée par une émulsion photosensible, la lumière du soleil laisse une impression bleue sur la toile. Cela donne lieu à des images qui sont littéralement touchées par la nature. Ces œuvres, en tant que visualisations abstraites du temps créées en plein air, possèdent certaines qualités impressionnistes. Parfois, elle amplifie aussi le pouvoir des ombres, en découpant ou en perforant leurs contours. Trous en forme d'ombre ou perforations qui laissent passer la lumière : Van Doren expérimente ainsi des manières d'influencer, de façonner ou de contenir la lumière naturelle.
En utilisant une combinaison de ces techniques, elle a créé le livre d'artiste Waiting for : assis, lisant à l'ombre d'un arbre, elle a permis au soleil de se frayer un chemin dans des pages perforées et sensibilisées à la lumière.
