Kawada’s The Map / Chizu is the most famous and sought after book in the history of Japanese photography. Designed with the noted graphic designer Kohei Sugiura, Chizu has seen numerous editions since its original publication in August 1965. In November 2001, New York Public Library acquired the rarest version of the book, Kikuji Kawada’s unique, handmade maquette. The maquette presents a notably different physicality than that of the published edition—many of the pictures are the same but with variant croppings, tonalities, orientations, and a markedly dissimilar configuration with a pair of jacketed volumes—each nearly twice as large in format as the published version—separated by a black-and-white divider. With its pages made of thin, silvery darkroom prints, folded in half and pasted back-to-back, there are no folios to unfurl, only a progression of intense, full-bleed images. This MACK version is an exquisite facsimile of the two-volume maquette, and includes an accompanying bilingual booklet featuring new scholarship by Joshua Chuang and Miyuki Hinton, together with an extended interview with the artist, detailing the evolution of one of the greatest photobooks ever made.

La Carte / Chizu de Kawada est le livre le plus célèbre et le plus recherché de l'histoire de la photographie japonaise. Conçu avec le célèbre graphiste Kohei Sugiura, Chizu a vu de nombreuses éditions depuis sa publication originale en août 1965. En novembre 2001, la bibliothèque publique de New York a acquis la version la plus rare du livre, la maquette unique et faite à la main de Kikuji Kawada. La maquette présente une physicalité notablement différente de celle de l'édition publiée - de nombreuses images sont les mêmes mais avec des recadrages, des tonalités, des orientations variables et une configuration nettement différente avec une paire de volumes chemisés - chacun presque deux fois plus grand en format que la version publiée, séparée par un intercalaire en noir et blanc. Avec ses pages composées d'impressions fines et argentées en chambre noire, pliées en deux et collées dos à dos, il n'y a pas de folios à dérouler, seulement une progression d'images intenses à fond perdu. Cette version MACK est un fac-similé exquis de la maquette en deux volumes, et comprend un livret bilingue d'accompagnement présentant une nouvelle bourse de Joshua Chuang et Miyuki Hinton, ainsi qu'un entretien prolongé avec l'artiste, détaillant l'évolution de l'un des plus grands livres photo jamais réalisés .
