“Nogata was a coal mining town in the Chikuho area of Kyushu. Ken Domon published a famous photobook about the closure of the mines and the effects on children living in that area called “Chikuho No Kodomotachi” in 1960. I was born in the town of Nogata that very same year. My family’s house was right behind Nogata station.
There were still many steam trains at the station in those days. My family moved to another prefecture when I was a 3rd grade elementary school student. Because of this, I can’t say that I really grew up in Nogata. And furthermore, I don't feel I really know anything about Nogata either. From 1983 onwards, I sometimes went back and visited Nogata with my camera, but at that time I didn't think I wanted to take documentary photos of them. These days, I have a little bit of regret that I didn't take an photos of the old station of the Onaka house as it was back then. I was looking for something like a hint of my childhood memories of the town in my photos.”

"Nogata était une ville minière de la région de Chikuho, à Kyushu. Ken Domon a publié en 1960 un célèbre livre de photos sur la fermeture des mines et les effets sur les enfants vivant dans cette région, intitulé "Chikuho No Kodomotachi". Je suis né dans la ville de Nogata cette même année. La maison de ma famille se trouvait juste derrière la gare de Nogata.
Il y avait encore beaucoup de trains à vapeur à la gare à cette époque. Ma famille a déménagé dans une autre préfecture lorsque j'étais en troisième année d'école primaire. Pour cette raison, je ne peux pas dire que j'ai vraiment grandi à Nogata. Et de plus, je n'ai pas non plus l'impression de connaître vraiment Nogata. À partir de 1983, je suis parfois retourné visiter Nogata avec mon appareil photo, mais à l'époque, je ne pensais pas vouloir faire des photos documentaires. Aujourd'hui, je regrette un peu de ne pas avoir pris de photos de l'ancienne gare de la maison Onaka telle qu'elle était à l'époque. Je cherchais quelque chose comme un soupçon de mes souvenirs d'enfance de la ville dans mes photos."
