“1974 was the first year that I went to Okinawa and it was exactly a one week stay. Most of the photos in this book are those I took during that trip.
However, the purpose of the trip to Okinawa then was not to take photos but for Shomei Tomatsu, Eikou Hosoe, Masahisa Fukase, Nobuyoshi Araki, and myself who all lived in Tokyo then to conduct a photo workshop with “Photo Taking” as the main theme for 10 plus photographers and photo lovers living in Okinawa.
Each time I found some time in between the 5 day Okinawa workshop schedule, I took along the only camera, a half size, I brought with me and shot approximately 2,000 cuts. I didn’t set any theme to work along but hopped from place to place like a bird feeds itself, allowing the towns I encountered for the first time to guide me along.” artist statement

“1974 a été la première année que je suis allé à Okinawa et c’était exactement un séjour d’une semaine. La plupart des photos de ce livre sont celles que j’ai prises pendant ce voyage.
Cependant, le but du voyage à Okinawa n’était alors pas de prendre des photos mais pour Shomei Tomatsu, Eikou Hosoe, Masahisa Fukase, Nobuyoshi Araki, et moi-même qui vivions tous à Tokyo puis pour diriger un atelier photo avec “Prise de photos” comme principal thème pour plus de 10 photographes et amateurs de photo vivant à Okinawa.
Chaque fois que je trouvais du temps entre les 5 jours de l’atelier d’Okinawa, j’emportais le seul appareil photo, une demi-taille, que j’apportais avec moi et photographiais environ 2000 coupes. Je n’ai défini aucun thème pour travailler, mais j’ai sauté d’un endroit à l’autre comme un oiseau qui picore, permettant aux villes que j’ai rencontrées pour la première fois de me guider.” texte de l’artiste
