The end of the 1970s saw the completion of Japan's postwar construction, as well as a withering of the student movement and the various terrorist acts that had shaken the global community.The early 1980s was a brief interlude of calm, anticipating the end of the long Showa era,before Japan was deluged by the bubble economy.
I had just returned to Japan in 1980, after studying for four years in Flanders where time moves slowly, and the atmosphere is very relaxed. In addition to the rapidly advancing westernization, the reality of this new Tokyo, where old pre-war Show ais blended with modern Showa (post-war) looked disorderly and chaotic to me, and it was not easy to capture it visually.
I struggled to realize my own mode of expression in this home country of mine, and began by chasing lights of the night-time to deflect this chaos.

La fin des années 70 a vu l'achèvement de la construction du Japon d'après-guerre, ainsi que le dépérissement du mouvement étudiant et les divers actes terroristes qui avaient secoué la communauté mondiale.Le début des années 80 a été un bref intermède de calme, anticipant la fin de la longue ère Showa, avant que le Japon ne soit submergé par la bulle économique.
Je venais de rentrer au Japon en 1980, après avoir étudié pendant quatre ans en Flandre, où le temps passe lentement et où l'atmosphère est très détendue. Outre la progression rapide de l'occidentalisation, la réalité de ce nouveau Tokyo, où le vieux Show ais d'avant-guerre se mêlait au Showa moderne (après-guerre), me semblait désordonnée et chaotique, et il n'était pas facile de la saisir visuellement.
J'ai lutté pour réaliser mon propre mode d'expression dans ce pays qui est le mien, et j'ai commencé par chasser les lumières de la nuit pour détourner ce chaos.
