Menart Fair 2024
Maryam Khosrovani

Joseph Saint Merri Gallery, Paris 03

We are pleased to announce that we will be presenting a selection of works by Iranian artist contemporary Maryam Khosrovani.

"The works presented here by Maryam Khosrovani bear witness above all to the artist's personal immersion in the rules, both geometric and metaphysical, that govern the links between the architecture of the garden space, the visual culture of the miniature and dreams or a certain psychology linked to water - particularly in Iranian culture. The works on paper, of an assumed delicacy, are the privileged terrain of chromatic and symbolic experiments that draw, precisely, floral or aquatic motifs towards an organic abstraction. Each proof worked in a different technique - pen, needle, collage - is implemented in the manner of a reconstruction of a traditional technique such as ceramics, painting on mirrors or even engraving on metal... but on paper.

Maryam Khosrovani's work is certainly a meticulous archive of motifs, capable of taking us through centuries of iconography through minimalist and radical gestures; it is also a palimpsest of techniques, supports and optical tools traditionally dedicated to the architectural design of the garden. The latter must consist, in the Iranian ideal type and in many places in Asia, of a central garden crossed in the shape of a cross by four watercourses, themselves surrounded by a flowerbed, then by trees.

All these elements can be found in the works presented here by Maryam Khosrovani: through zoomed images or even visual flashbacks (or olfactory with the installation of cubes on the ground which are perfume urns), but also missing or semi-abstract images. Like an archaeologist deciphering forgotten signs and codes, Maryam Khosravoni subtly thwarts the artist/artisan boundary, by questioning the disappearance and survival of these motifs today; or the possibility of making them circulate outside their original framework – like motifs in exile."

We are delighted to announce that we will be presenting a selection of works by contemporary Iranian artist Maryam Khosrovani.

'The works presented here by Maryam Khosrovani bear witness above all to the artist's personal immersion in the rules, both geometric and metaphysical, that govern the links between the architecture of garden space, the visual culture of the miniature and the dreams or a certain psychology associated with water - particularly in Iranian culture. The works on paper, with their deliberate delicacy, are the ideal setting for chromatic and symbolic experiments that draw the floral and aquatic motifs towards an organic abstraction. Each print, produced using a different technique - pen, needle, collage - is recreated in the same way as traditional techniques such as ceramics, mirror painting or metal engraving - but on paper.

Maryam Khosrovani's work is certainly a meticulous archive of motifs, capable of taking us through centuries of iconography through minimalist and radical gestures; it is also a palimpsest of techniques, media and optical tools traditionally dedicated to the architectural design of the garden. In the Iranian ideal, and in many parts of Asia, the garden is composed of a central garden crossed in the shape of a cross by four watercourses, themselves surrounded by a flowerbed and trees.

All these elements can be found in the works presented here by Maryam Khosrovani: through zoomed-in images or visual flashbacks (or olfactory flashbacks with the installation of cubes on the floor that are urns for perfume), but also missing or semi-abstract images . Like an archaeologist deciphering forgotten signs and codes, Maryam Khosrovani finely eludes the artist/artisan boundary, questioning the disappearance and survival of these motifs today; or the possibility of circulating them outside their original setting - like motifs in exile'.
