Chieko Shiraishi
Chieko Shiraishi is a Japanese photographer, born in 1968 in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. Working alongside Katsuhito Nakazato and Kazuo Kitai in a studio in Funabashi-shi, Chiba Prefecture, she learned how to work in the darkroom and mastered printing techniques. This experience allowed her to create an intimate world and become a true virtuoso of silver-based printing.
With a genuine artistic ambition, Chieko doesn't hesitate to complete her images with a brushstroke or a rag. She strives for perfection, with meticulous work, bringing out every detail of the image. The various processes she uses allow her to create a unique pictorial appearance that is found in all of her prints.
Since 1998, she has presented around twenty solo exhibitions in several galleries in Japan (Tokyo, Chiba, and Osaka), Italy (Venice), and France (Paris). Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts and the Ashikaga Museum of Art.
Chieko Shiraishi has also published several photography books, including Saboten to Shippo (Cactus and tail) in 2008 and Shimakage (Shadow of the Island) in 2015. She also co-published Umi ni Shizunda Machi (Cities that sank into the sea) in 2011. In 2019, she even won the prestigious Higashikawa Prize for her book Shikawatari (The Crossing of the Deer). Today, Chieko lives and works in Tokyo.
