Here for the first time are the works of a generation of photographers from all over the African continent, brought together by Ekow Eshun. These images were all taken in the 21st century, often less than ten years ago.
Far from a Western vision heavy with stereotypes, Ekow Eshun observes the way in which contemporary photographers approach Africanness and present Africa as a psychic space as much as a physical one.
It is a geographical territory, but also a state of mind that their works reflect: from the daily life of sprawling cities and constantly changing landscapes to the weight of colonial and postcolonial heritage, through questions of gender, sexuality and identity.
Bringing together more than 300 photographs by 51 artists, Africa 21 e century paints a fascinating panorama of a particularly dynamic part of contemporary photography. 51 sharp looks at contemporary societal, cultural, political and ecological issues.
Ekow Eshun is an exhibition curator, journalist and writer.
He has collaborated with the BBC, the Financial Times, The New York Times and The Guardian. He is the author of Africa Modern (2017)
and Black Gold of the Sun (2005).
