South Sudan is at a critical period in its history. In 2005, a peace agreement between the north and south of the country ended Africa's longest civil war. A referendum followed, allowing the south to become independent. Forgotten by the world, South Sudan yet remains one of the poorest countries in the world; a situation that has been captured by Cédric Gerbehaye's obsession with his in-depth work.

Sudan, Africa's largest country, is going through a crucial period in its history. In 2005, a peace agreement between the north and south of the country ended Africa's longest civil war (22 years), and a referendum allowed the south to become independent in 2011.
But for the ancient Egyptian kingdom of Kush, named South Sudan and recognized by the UN as the 193rd member state, the situation has hardly changed: chronic malnutrition, few roads, no schools, thousands of displaced people, growing insecurity. Added to this are struggles over the demarcation of the border, the distribution of oil wealth and agricultural land, the sharing of the Nile waters...
Forgotten by the world, South Sudan remains one of the poorest and least developed countries on the planet, a situation that Cédric Gerbehaye captured with his characteristic commitment and obsession for in-depth work.
The title of the book, Land of Cush, refers to the ancient kingdom of Kush mentioned in the Bible, the name given to the territory that today corresponds to Sudan; it is also the title that the South Sudanese have chosen for their national anthem.
