New York, 1988, Hiroshi Sugimoto's work is exhibited at Sonnabend Gallery. This catalogue, retracing three now-mythical series mentioned in the title, is published there.
Dioramas is the first of these, both in this book and in his body of work. Struck by museum dioramas, he realized that the illusion would work best through the lens of a camera, thus creating these unsettling images due to their proximity to reality. He then began Theaters in 1976, where he photographed theaters and cinemas with exposure times deliberately as long as the film's duration. Finally, using this same long-exposure approach, he created Seascape . While the split composition of the photographs remains consistent, so many details and variations are to be found in each image.
Probably one of his very first major exhibitions, this rare and vintage book is both a historical collector's item and a superb overview of the work of this great name in Japanese photography.
