" We can assume that photography (photographing) is objective and painting (rendering) is subjective. Usually, an artist chooses one approach or the other, but I opt for a method that links the two, makes them parallel or combines them ." Kunié Sugiura

Since beginning his career in the mid-1960s, Kunié Sugiura has forged a distinctive artistic practice that encompasses unconventional photographic techniques and multimedia expression. Sugiura's multiple engagements with photography, painting, and sculpture are brought together in this seminal collection of works, which chart the expansion of his dynamic practice over nearly six decades.

Sugiura has consistently challenged the conventions of photography by using new materials to create multi-layered works. Her interests in corporeality, the natural world, and urban landscapes permeate her varied and experimental projects, which incorporate psychedelic and solarized images, photographs printed on canvas, photograms, and X-rays. Echoing her identity as a Japanese woman who has lived most of her life in New York City, her heterogeneous work constitutes a generative exploration of hybrid forms that challenges singular definitions.
