Published in 2014, Nobuyoshi Araki created "Photography for the Afterlife" as a quasi-chronicle of his photographic career, believing that his remaining time on earth was short due to his age and declining health.
Spanning over 300 pages, "Photography for the Afterlife" brings together all the works in which the master photographer has explored the themes of life and death over the past 50 years, in both black and white and color. It includes, of course, some of his most celebrated masterpieces, from "Sachin" to "Sentimental Journey/Winter Journey," including "Chiro Ai Shi" (about the final days of his beloved cat) and "Road." Essays by the writer Masaru Hamada, the philosopher Mario Perniola, and the writer Kaori Fujino further explore Araki's work and his relationship to death.
