"When Nobuyoshi Araki chose the title 'Kukei—skyscapes' for his first exhibition after his wife's death six months earlier, he was partly referring to 'skyscapes' (Ku-Kei)—the central theme of the works in the book—also evokes the idea of an 'empty landscape' (in Japanese ' ku ' also means a hollow, a void, or an expanse, something that has no ground or substance, in other words, nothingness). Moreover, Araki's 'kukei' sounds and looks exactly like the word 'kukei', which means 'emptiness of the marital bed.'"
