This new series by Rinko Kawauchi celebrates the tenth title in the Birds collection. The Japanese photographer focused her attention on the swallows in her neighborhood in Chiba City in spring, during the birthing season, and in particular on these tiny nests that the birds build, sheltered from prying eyes, in window embrasures or in the eaves of roofs, in order to protect their broods, fed by their parents for several weeks. Fascinated by this spectacle, with her characteristic poetry and attention to detail, Rinko Kawauchi brings out the wonder of our daily lives and the ephemeral beauty of suspended moments. The swallows, thanks to their sharp wings, perch everywhere with ease and elegance, bathed in an opalescent light.
This book is part of the Birds collection, which celebrates, through the eyes of various artists, their immense presence in a world where they are now weakened. Ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre offers a new essay to accompany each photographic collection. For this book, he focuses on the lifestyle of these swallows, their history, their spring migration from south to north over thousands of kilometers, the birth season, and their special relationship with humans, which has led them to find themselves threatened today.
