"Every now and then, a new photographer appears on the scene who is difficult to categorize; Kawauchi is one of them. His images are so fresh, so simple, and so original that they almost defy understanding. Utatane translates as nap, which works perfectly with the almost dreamlike quality of these images." - Martin Parr.
Just when it seems that everything has been photographed in every possible way, a photographer appears whose work is so original that photography itself is renewed. Rinko Kawauchi is such a photographer; she makes simple, lyrical images so fresh and unusual that they are difficult to describe or categorize. Her images document everyday life, but cannot be called documentary. They are generally light in tone, but have a kind of dark humor. They are dreamlike, almost hallucinatory, and yet they seem to capture something fundamental about the psychological state of modern life, like a series of stills from a film about a dream.
