The moon – always source of inspiration and imagination throughout history of the mankind. Setting off on the imaginative journey through fictitious space by browsing the pages of the photo book, the viewer is confronted with a surprising fact on the very last page – turning the reception of the whole book upside down.
That last page is the crucial point, where the mystery of the moons' origin is revealed. One realizes: what you see is not what you look at.
You are welcome to join the space trip, feel free to discover formerly unseen images of mysterious moons from an unknown galaxy, as the dawn of reality is catching up behind the scenes.
“A small step for mankind, but a big step towards your fantasy. Alternative facts for planetary dreamers!”
- Manfred Zollner (fotoMAGAZIN)
About the authors
Alternative Moons is the first photobook by Nadine Schlieper and Robert Pufleb. Their collaboration is based on the perception of visual phenomena emerging from everyday situations, creating an atmosphere of ambivalence, constantly challenging the secrets of the visible.
-----
This book is the result of a discovery, not scientific but culinary, by the German duo composed of photographer Robert Pufleb and graphic designer Nadine Schlieper.
More than 50 years after the Apollo mission, the moon remains a land of enigmas. Target of conspiracy theories, international conquerors and present in many mythologies, the moon is this mysterious star that influences men and animals.
This book continues to explore other hidden faces by questioning our relationship with the images presented, which are called into question in the era of fake news and the gap between truth, perception, interpretation and the power of manipulation through images.
The title Alternative moons refers in particular to the terms alternative facts used by Kellyane Conway to defend Sean Spicer accused of having inflated the popularity of the inauguration ceremony of American president Donald Trump.
It is only at the end of the book that we discover the true identity of the stars presented by the duo, with a recipe and some advice (a successful recipe, because the book also won the Vienna Photo Book Award in 2017): The two authors made more than a hundred pancakes, varying the cooking and the ingredients to achieve this rendering. The models were not touched, placed on a hemisphere and photographed from above in natural light.
A meticulous work worthy of a scientific laboratory experiment, presented on a black background that reminds us of certain legendary science fiction films. Lunar.
