With its generous selection of works from her 30-year career, the photo book "Blue Water" captures the very essence of Sakiko Nomura's photography.
Published to coincide with a major solo exhibition in Shimonoseki, Nomura's hometown, this book explores the past while presenting previously unseen photographs by one of Japan's most acclaimed photographers. A former assistant to Nobuyoshi Araki, Sakiko Nomura exudes a photographic power and intensity imbued with serenity and delicacy. Withered flowers, shifting garments, glimpses of skin, palpable absences, and intense gazes: Nomura's works play with desire, eroticism, and allusion.
"Blue Water" also includes the short story "Umi-kaze" ("Sea Breeze") by the writer Shinya Tanaka, originally from Shimonoseki (all texts are available only in Japanese).
