That a woman is the subject of this book is not surprising, as Sawatari Hajime became a legendary portraitist by photographing female models. What is striking, however, is the unexplained and strangely fitting presence of this octopus throughout the book. More than simply inserting an additional object into the frame, the photographer here bridges the gap between sexuality and animality, thus creating a unique atmosphere through portraits in soft black and white, without detracting from the wild aspect of the poses.
