Aichi Mandala: The early Works of Shomei Tomatsu peaks into Shomei Tomatsu's beginning of the career, who was born in Nagoya, Aichi prefecture in 1930. The city functioned as a military base, making Tomatsu's sensitive to his surroundings and his artistic vision. His photos were first exhibited while he was still a student at Aichi University, marking the starting point of the artistic journey. This edition wrapped in an elegant silver cover showcases his work from before the mid-1960's: at the time he mainly focused on the postwar life of Aichi: military bases, ruins, industrial buildings and the people who lived in this reality.

Tomatsu moved to Tokyo after graduating and his work has been presented at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography as well as in the United States and Europe. Tomatsu is best known for his atomic bomb images, but as well for his post-war documentation depicting Japan from his perspective, in his own words the real Japan.
