In her series “Latenza,” Vittoria Gerardi explores the concept of the latent image within each print before it is revealed and the links between light and temporality. She uses plant elements as negatives, employs an experimental process of partially revealing images, and does not fix her prints. The works thus become photosensitive and the images change shape and color under the effect of light. Photography becomes “photosynthesis” of the plant world. These prints are kept in wooden boxes equipped with doors that allow light to enter, and thus allow the print to evolve. The doors crimp an enameled copper plate. On its visible exterior, the enamel is a monochrome glass (10 enamels for the 10 colors of the visible spectrum (white, yellow, orange, red, gray, green, blue, indigo, violet, and black)). Inside, the enamel has a dendritic shape resulting from a reaction between copper and glass.
