“1 2 3 2 1” is a 304-page photo-novel by Yao Yuan, which juxtaposes images created during and after Nagakura Nami’s pregnancy and the birth of her child, between 2017 and 2019. Alongside images from Yao Yuan’s personal life and her travels between Japan and China, “1 2 3 2 1” contemplates ancient allegories and world-building in the contemporary condition through an intimate and queer lens. The book depicts a multitude of cinematic cityscapes and natural landscapes, vigorous colors, and mundane everyday moments. Raw emotions and mundane transience coexist, reflecting on a range of topics such as time, memories, gender, borders, identity, spirituality, nature, healing, care, reality, and mystery.
