The fourth issue is dedicated to Yamatani Yusuke's long-term project, "Onsen." He regularly travels to the summits of Japan's volcanic mountains, accompanied by friends and strangers, to photograph them during communal bathing. Through this work, Yamatani simultaneously explores the relationship between the body and nature, within a primeval geology, as well as the historical social relationships fostered by the act of communal bathing. Convinced that similar scenes existed millennia ago, he creates images that are as raw as they are sensitive, depicting unsexualized bodies in timeless settings. This dialogue between nature and culture feels strangely contemporary, yet also primal. Text by Galaad Van Daele.
