A photographic exploration of a group of tekiya (street vendors) by Hitomi Watanabe that follows the preparations of local festival. The tekiyas, that are mostly men, move from one place to another taking part of the folk fests and inner city scapes. Here Hitomi Watanabe is photographing their footsteps during 3 years, creating black and white imagery of their transitory lives.
“They were some rough-and-tumble men, filled with fervor, wackiness and laziness. I rushed back to my place to grab my camera and immersed myself in taking pictures of those people as soon as I returned. After 10 minutes or so, I was surrounded by those men. A middle-aged lady yelled at me too, saying "if you take pictures you will be beaten half to death!" While I was expecting an immediate punch from somebody, this man who seemed to be a boss among the group came up close with his overwhelming body odor and told me to take photos of him. He was like a godsend to me. This is how I started my career as a tekiya street photographer.” — Hitomi Watanabe

Vers la fin des années 1960, Hitomi Watanabe fit la connaissance d'un groupe de tekiya (marchands ambulants). Ces marchands ambulants - qui font partie intégrante des fêtes folkloriques et des paysages du centre-ville - viennent de nulle part, puis passent bientôt à autre chose. Watanabe les a suivis et photographiés pendant trois ans.
«C'étaient des hommes agités, pleins de ferveur, de folie et de paresse. Je me suis précipitée chez moi pour attraper mon appareil photo et repartie toute de suite pour photographier tous ces personnes dès mon retour. Au bout de 10 minutes environ, j'étais entouré de ces hommes. Une dame d'âge moyen m'a crié dessus, en disant: "Si vous prenez des photos, vous serez battue à mort!" Alors que je m'attendais à un coup de poing immédiat de quelqu'un, cet homme qui semblait être un des patrons du groupe s'est approché et de son odeur corporelle écrasante m'a dit de le prendre en photo. C'était comme une aubaine pour moi. C'est ainsi que j'ai commencé ma carrière de photographe de rue. - Hitomi Watanabe
