What does freedom mean? Through the lens of her camera and through a kaleidoscope of history of women in resistance in the Middle East and North Africa Mashid put together a multidimensional work which, through its varied formats such as photography, collage, text, and historical images, takes the viewer on a dreamlike journey neither bound by space nor time. Mashid’s work is permeated with the duelling nature of documentation and art, past and present, pain and joy, war and peace, loss and creation.
This artist's book focusses on the private and public world of Iranian women who grew up after the Revolution of 1979 and on places of significance from Mashid’s childhood. For these women the political can no longer be separated from the personal - their bodies, their private and public life have been and continue to be influenced by the Revolution.
Mashid Mohadjerin's works is part of an Artistic Doctoral Research at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Antwerp, which started as a research on female freedom fighters and culminated in a very personal journey to her native Iran.

Au travers de l'objectif de son appareil photo, et d'un kaleïdoscope d'histoires de femmes en résistance dans le Monde Arabe, Mashid Mohadjerin a assemblé un travail aux dimensions multiples qui, au travers de ses divers formats tels que la photographie, le collage, le texte, et les images historiques, emporte le spectateur dans un voyage onirique lié ni à l'espace ni au temps.
Le livre d'artiste et l'exposition Freedom is Not Free se focalisent sur les univers privés et publics des femmes iraniennes qui ont grandi après la révolution de 1979, et sur des lieux importants de l'enfance de Mohadjerin. Pour ces femmes, le politique ne peut plus être distinguée du personnel; leurs corps, leurs vies publique et privée continuent d'être influencées par la révolution.
Freedom is Not Free est le résultat du travail de recherche de thèse de Mashid Mohadjerin à la Royal Academy of Fine Arts et à l'Université de Anvers. "
