The heart of Brazil is Bahia, a state located in the very heart of the country. Bahia is the cradle of Brazil's most interesting cultural movement. For example, it gave birth to the music of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and the literature of Jorge Amado. It is in Bahia that we find "Literatura de Cordel," popular stories all written in verse. In the hinterland of Bahia, the small towns of the Brazilian "sertão" still have the flavor of the real Brazil, which is disappearing with globalization. The simplicity, gentleness, charm, and beauty of Brazil can still be seen on the faces of the inhabitants of the small towns. The Sertão de Bahia has been the scene of several conflicts and suffers from a severe permanent drought. This situation has given rise to very industrious and robust people who have survived. Claudio Edinger photographed this region between the two towns of Bom Jesus and Milagres, creating a body of stunning and unique work, all shot in color with a 4x5 camera.
