This is the second volume in Fan Ho's photogravure portfolio, known for his black and white photographs capturing the streets of Hong Kong and its inhabitants in the 1950s. Echoing the previous, highly acclaimed "Selected Works," this selection conveys the atmosphere of Hong Kong's streets at the time, highlighting iconic works by Fan Ho, who skillfully uses the contrast between light and shadow to create dramatic atmospheres.
Fan Ho left Shanghai for Hong Kong in 1949 and is known for his works capturing the post-World War II Hong Kong cityscape and the daily lives of its inhabitants. His skillful use of light and shadow and his poetic expression are highly regarded. Many of his works evoke affection for ordinary Hong Kong people, and his way of capturing their lives and emotions has earned him the nickname "the Cartier-Bresson of the Orient."
