As for my practice of wandering towns by night, I think it began during my later elementary school years when I was around 10, a long time before I picked up the camera, when I was not able to enthuse about study and didn't like television so much, and wasted most of my after-school time reading manga and listening to talk-radio and songs.
But these activities failed to absorb me. In the nook of my classroom and in my own room alone, I escaped reality by creating a fictitious world woven from my lust and self-love, in which my real friends appeared, and girls too. In those days I felt as if the real, rich world surrounding me existed only to highlight my warped mind and inferiority complex. The only "real" life in which I engaged was strolling the streets after dark.
In the cool air of the kind of nights in which busy townscape acquires transparency, my juvenile desires and curiosity were stirred up even more than in my illusory world..

As for my practice of wandering around cities at night, I think it started during my last years of elementary school when I was about 10 years old, long before I picked up the camera, when I was not able to get excited about studying and I didn't like television that much, and I wasted most of my time after school reading manga and listening to talk radio and songs.
But these activities did not absorb me. In the corner of my classroom and in my room alone, I escaped reality by creating a fictional world woven from my lust and self-esteem, in which my real friends appeared, and girls too. At that time, I felt that the real and rich world around me existed only to highlight my distorted mind and my inferiority complex. The only "real" life I engaged in was wandering the streets after dark.
In the fresh air of the kind of nights when the busy cityscape acquires transparency, my youthful desires and curiosity were even more excited than in my illusory world.
