Taken between 2021 and 2024 across Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kagoshima in the south, Koji Onaka once again bathes the scenes unfolding before him in a strange and nostalgic glow. In "Tin Roof & Chimney," he focuses on buildings, nooks and crannies, and rural landscapes—places marked by decay and patina. His photographs possess a transformative power, appearing as much as projections of the past as the fond memories of a time traveler.
Time has passed, and now the family restaurants and Japanese inns have vanished from the train stations of rural Japan. The shopping streets have closed their shutters, and the children have disappeared from the parks. Yet, as I stepped off the train and walked toward the distant chimneys, fragments of memories, secretly present in the city, compelled me to press the shutter.
