There was a time, in my late twenties, when I felt the desire to disappear from the earthly world. Kumogakure has no direct translation in English. This term means to be hidden by clouds, enveloped, invisible. Unable to bear my world and the events surrounding it, I spent two years wandering blindly in the fog of Hokkaido and Tohoku… Throughout my travels, I dreamed of a transcendental self beyond my own identity. Overwhelmed by memories of unprecedented experiences, overwhelmed by every emotion, I felt an immense longing for a self from an unknown time, without gender or age, raised and nurtured in the heart of those mountain villages and unfamiliar seaside resorts.
