The photographs, taken over a period of five years, are presented out of chronological order. They depict objects and themes that Araki has already explored in his previous books and series (flowers, female nudes, dolls, sex toys, views from his balcony, everyday encounters, a few street scenes). However, "Kata-Me" exudes a much more nostalgic, wistful, almost melancholic atmosphere.
The title "Kata-Me" (a typical Araki pun) gives an overview of the book's context:
"Composed of the Japanese characters for 'one side or unilateral' (Kata) and 'eye' (me), the title Kata-Me not only refers to Araki's physical condition, but also represents a poignant, particularly humorous and witty confrontation with the reality that life is inseparable from loss and death, and with his relentless desire to capture life as it is."
