“The Lantern Festival of the Chinese New Year is celebrated in a certain village in Hebei Province, China, with a festival called Da Shuhua. This festival—which tradition dates back more than three hundred years—has its origins in the ancient custom of local blacksmiths to celebrate the New Year by throwing molten metal at the city walls, in place of fireworks, which they were too poor to buy. A luminous idea born from a yearning for beauty that can be found even among people plunged into poverty. The splashes of fire on the walls form a rain of light, and the men who continually throw scraps of iron under the fiery rain that pours down on them resemble warriors struggling against an invisible force.” (From the text by Rinko Kawauchi.) Cloth cover enhanced with metallic flakes. Bound in Japanese style.
