This book is a collection of photographs published on the occasion of Ishimoto's photography exhibition "A Tale of Two Cities" held at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. Consisting of photographs taken in Chicago and Tokyo (partially Kyoto), the first half shows similar works taken in the two cities side by side, and the middle section shows the city of Chicago at the same time as "Chicago, Chicago." Finally, photographs of Tokyo taken between the 1950s and 1990s are summarized.
Born in San Francisco in 1921, he lived in Kochi from 1924 to 1939, then moved to the United States on his own. After studying architecture at Northwestern University in Chicago, he graduated from the Institute of Design (commonly known as the New Bauhaus, merged with the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1949) with a degree in photography in 1952. After returning to Japan, he lived in Chicago from 1958 to 1961. In 1969, he published a photo book entitled "Chicago, Chicago," which collected photographs taken during his two stays, during his studies and after graduation.
